标题: Bike Cops
在CITYTV网上看到的,转过来:

Here are a few reminders from Toronto Police about navigating the means streets of the city on a bike:

A bike is the same as a car

O.K., not quite. But under the Highway Traffic Act, it's defined as a vehicle. That means it's subject to the same laws as automobiles.

You can't ride on the sidewalk

It's been illegal for a while now, but people still do it. And if cops catch you, you're liable for an $85 fine.

Have the right equipment

It's hard to believe but it's happened. A cop can stop you and give you a ticket if you don't have a headlight ($30), a bell or a horn ($90) or your brakes aren't working properly ($90).

Helmets

They're mandatory for kids under 18, but are recommended for everyone to reduce head or brain injuries. Failure to have your child wear one can cost you $60.

Other fines

You know what drivers are subject to. Here's what cyclists face if they don't do the right thing on the roads.

Careless Driving: $265
Riding on a closed road: $90.
Disobeying a stop sign: $90.
Failure to yield at a yield sign: $90.
Failure to yield to a pedestrian: $90.
Passing a stopped vehicle at a crosswalk: $90.
Passing a stopped streetcar at a crosswalk: $90.
Dangerous lane change: $90
Failure to signal a turn: $90.
Going through a red light: $90.
Riding on the sidewalk: $90.
Driving the wrong way on a one way street: $90.
Two on a bike at once: $90.
Refusing to I.D. yourself to an officer when asked: $90.

What's careless driving? Wearing seatbelt might be added to the list.

Some of the charges are rediculous when applied to bike riders.

the demerit points don't apply to cyclists:
http://www.wheels.ca/article/473658

A: Ontario transportation ministry spokesperson Bob Nichols replies:

Bicycles are not included in the definition of "motor vehicle" under the Highway Traffic Act. As such, and in relation to section 210 of the HTA, convictions for offences that occurred on a bicycle are not recorded by the ministry (on an individual's driving record) and the Demerit Point System does not apply.

And also on thisHighway Traffic Act Bicycle Violations PDF file  http://www.toronto.ca/cycling/pdf/hta.pdf, it says:

Demerit Point System does not apply to cyclists
Section 56: “The Lieutenant Governor in Council may make regulations providing for a demerit point system for drivers of
motor vehicles or of streetcars.”
