The route's "official" grade is YDS 5.6 (for those wearing rock climbing shoes) and it is quite higher for those climbing alpine size (wearing boots). It was not easy! 8)
The "Alpine Edition" route on Chief's First Peak is great way to keep in (mountaineering) shape - the views are great, the approach is short, the rock is clean, the parking is free and safe (sort of). For those who are into technical alpine this route could mean same as Grouse Grind is for hard-core hikers. 8)
2017.05.04 BCMC Trail with Climbing Gear (up and down)
Our original plan was not hiking, so we wanted to ride the gondola up, but seeing the huge boring line we ended up hiking BCMC trail (with ~30lb packs full of climbing gear). At least we were lucky with parking.
California Climbers' Salute at the Peak.
Upon return, we obviously faced another equally huge and equally boring line (~1hr), so we chose to hike back down. Why we carried the climbing gear (including our brand new 90m rappel rope!) is another story.. Still a lot of heavy wet spring snow over there (see avalanche advisory by NSR here) .8)
Surprisingly (at least to us), we didn't meet any humans at this part which is just next to the super popular and overcrowded area of The Chief / Shannon Falls. We could hear the noise of the falls. But we saw no rock climbers and no hikers..Good for us - our 2-way radios channel was not shared by anybody else..we felt pretty good especially after the preceding day's crowds madness at GG 8)
Rappel station at the top of the Gobsmacking Wall (we couldn't see the bottom, so we guessed)
Only when one arrives here, can realize that the wall is actually bigger than one rope length - the bottom end of the rope doesn't touch the ground 8)
It is exactly three years ago when Vera stepped, for the very first time, on technical rock. Who knew that in the next three years there will be 140 peaks waiting to be climbed..8)
More training ensued: getting mileage with (new) equipment: longer ropes and smaller belay devices.

Infamous Bellygood Ledge splits the wall in half: from here it is ~150m up to the rim and ~150m down to the deck. Also, one can "walk out" along the ledge to the right to the regular tourist trail ("just" don't look down!). The vertical black line has a name too - "The Black Dyke". 8)
