Due to the higher than usual temperatures this year and higher freezing levels, it might be advisible to be very careful when crossing Lesser Garibaldi and Garibaldi lake: Perhaps using the Summer route around the barrier and lesser Garibaldi Lakes. I noticed this information on one of the Club Tread reports yesterday.
We crossed directly on Barrier lake and I put my snowshoes from there. We went through the frozen creek between Barrier Lake and Lesser Garibaldi Lake. Now from there it got a bit tricky. The lake is actually not completely frozen so we had to go on the side and go through some sketchy passages. The water was going very fast just under us, I don t think there was a risk of falling in but we did slow down the pace
From the looks of the pictures in this CT Trip report, Garibaldi Lake itself looks in reasonable condition
If you can hear the water running underneath and in some cases see it, then you are "treading on thin ice" as we say in English
On some bad years in the past some groups have used a light 8mm or 9mm rope while crossing and staying a good distance apart while roped up. A wonderful safety tool :) |
