the difference between a coping strategy and an aggravating factor ...

I am just an engineer, not a translator. So I try to explain these two sentences . U might pardon me if I am not on the same page with you.
The document is not for an operating manual, but typical American NBA sentences. U do not read his/her lips, but digest it. These sentences are psychological correct.
"Coping strategy" means u need to be well prepared before your action.
"Aggravating factor" is something could be worse.
It translates as: U need to know the difference between "be well prepared" and "worse situation".
It means "Even u are well prepared, still, the situation could be worse than u prepared."
Example: All pilots are trained how to fly under one engine failure. This is "coping strategy". Last yr, an airplane of US Airways had both engines died and the pilot safely landed the airplane on the Hudson River. This is "aggravating factor".
"Show-shoppers could scupper your trip" might mean unexpected factors could jeopardize your plan. U have to know how to face unexpected situation. Do not think u can beat the mother nature.
Example: Last Xmas when we were in the village of Yosemite with all warm cloths and enough food, we planned to have an ice skating next night. But next morning, weather forecast had a snow storm coming and all roads would be closed for days. So we had to rush out heading to Los Angeles.
Do u see the new movie "127 Hours", which is about the hiker who cut off his arm to save his life seven yrs ago? Prepare the worst.

I don't agree with the explanation of the first sentence. my understanding is in a specific situation, you think your action is a 'coping strategy', but actually it's a worsening factor. for instance, to lose some weight, someone thinks skipping his breakfast is his 'coping strategy' for his obessity, but, actually, skipping breakfast is a worsening factor for his obessity. he needs to eat more at lunch and dinner, which gains him more weight. another example, america thinks the war excercise in Huang sea is a coping strategy for dealing with both North Korea and China, but it might be an aggravating factor that makes the situation more complicated and worse. |
