本周六雪鞋活动召集Mt. Mercer in Chilliwack area (Dec,18,2010)

Hi Gloria:

The road is in good shape with some potholes up to Thurston FSR because of logging.  Hiking up from there only adds about 4km.  The snow might stop you from going any further anyway so I wouldn't worry about 4x4, just count on 6 - 8 hours instead of 4 .

I'm not a fast hiker so the times I give you are how long it would take me. I hike a little faster then the times in 108 hikes though.  I hope you have a good trip!

    I hate to give a vague answer but you can go pretty far. There is active
    logging on the lower part of the logging road so you can drive it with 2wd at least high enough that the hike is still reasonable say 2 1/2 hrs to
    the summit.

Directions
Follow Highway #1 (Trans-Canada Highway) to Chilliwack, taking Exit #119 South. Follow Vedder Road until a three-way stop just before a bridge over the Vedder River. Zero your odometer here and turn left at the stop sign onto Chilliwack Lake Road. At the 28 km mark and immediately after one of the Vedder River bridge crossings, turn left onto Chilliwack-Foley Forest Service Road. Zero your odometer again here.

Follow the forest service road for 2.0 km, turning left at the T-junction after the bridge over Foley Creek. Travel west for another 4.5 km, turning right onto Thurston Forest Service Road. Reset your odometer again here. At the 0.6 km and 2.2 km marks of Thurston FSR, take the left fork each time. At the 2.6 km mark, take the right fork.

Past this point, the road becomes extremely rough and even the toughest 4x4 vehicles will have an extremely difficult time making it much further. The rains and storms of the winter of 2006 has transformed what was left of the road into a rutted, hazardous, and dangerous mess. There are several culverts that are blown out, leaving the road at the mercy of the runoff. If there were any cross-ditches in place to save this road, they are no longer serving their purpose.

Don't risk driving up this section of road and ruining your vehicle or endangering yourself - park and walk to the trailhead.

These are directions to Mt. Mercer itself. You can also get to Mt. Mercer via the Elk/ Thurston ridge trail, but that's a smokin' long hike.

Either way, the pass itself is at around the 5000 foot mark, and the trail to Mercer begins here; following the ridge through forest and meadow to Mercer Summit. The hike along the actual trail is roughly one hour at a leisurely pace. Great views of the Mt. Laughington and the Cheam Range from Mercer Summit.
