[闲聊]

Thanks for Dr's flexibility about the date, so people with unfixed working schedule can have a chance to go hiking on weekdays besides weekends. Thanks again.

Motel 66, winter setup. Trusty liquid fuel stove temporarily malfunctioned which made us imagine spending cold night without a hot drink. We had a backup canister stove which took forever to make 2 cups of melted snow, only because we kept pouring warm water on top of the canister to make it work. In such situation next night at the Vantage Peak was out of question, but luckily the primary stove restored itself as if nothing happened. It has never failed for the past 12 years, and is the only piece of gear that is still around for so long time. 8)

A pair of skiers leaving Motel 66 for Matier (top left). They will turn back without reaching the summit because of cold and wind.

It was a lot colder than most people expected. Even carrying enough warm clothes and powerful hand warmers (we use fuel-based Zippos), without paying attention to the elements one of us got two fingers frostbitten. It takes months to heal. Painful too.

For that matter see Alpine Tip #14: "Gear one level up"

That's what they call "dagger technique". Downclimbing hard snow even without overnight 39lb pack needs care, even 30 degrees icy slope can kill. 8)

Wearing just microspikes here will provide some mental comfort, at least it is something more than just boots, but full crampons sure are what have to be worn. 8)
