Hannegan Peak
Preview: Hannegan Pass is the prime entry into the Chilliwack and Picket section of the North Cascades National Park. The trail along Ruth Creek traverses above a striking valley dominated by the glittering ice-clad Ruth Mountain. Hannegan Pass and Hannegan Peak offer a view of the north wall of Mount Shuksan, the Pickets, and a chain of peaks floating off into the horizon. The exalted landscape encompasses the kingly domains of Baker, Shuksan, Ruth, Triumph, Challenger, Redoubt, and Slesse. This trip is best done with snow to make it a true scramble; in late season the trail to Hannegan Pass and on to the ridge makes the trip an easy one even for beginners. Still it is well worth the minimal effort to link with the marvelous wilderness that lies just beyond this tame gateway.
