Tree wells were all in the news a few years ago after a number of fatalities. In
case you haven't heard of them, the blog at the Whistler-Blackcomb website has a
recent article explaining their dangers:
Studies have shown that it is impossible to self-rescue from a tree well (unless
you go in feet first), so make sure to keep all group members in sight at all
times, and/or ski with another person.
Fatalities caused by tree wells are sometimes known as Snow Immersion
Suffocations (formerly Non-Avalanche Related Snow Immersion Death - NARSID).
