Keeping the Wilderness Wild: Your Weekly Leave No Trace Tip
----------------------------------------------------------------
By Taryn Eyton, happiestoutdoors.ca
Leave No Trace Principle #5: Minimize Campfire Impacts. Many people believe that
it’s not really camping if you don’t have a campfire. But fires can leave
lasting impacts on the landscape including forest fire scars, forests with
thousands of chopped tree limbs from firewood over-harvesting and scorched soil
and rock from improperly placed fire rings. This week’s LNT Tip: If you choose
to have a fire, use an existing fire ring (or better yet a metal fire pit if
there is one) and avoid building a new one. This concentrates fire scars in
areas that are already impacted. Choose branches from dead and down trees when
gathering firewood since standing trees provide important habitat for animals. |
