Mount Sproatt Ski Ascent (1 Day) . Calculated Length: 8 km

Terrain: Steep tree ski to large alpine ridge

Description: A popular early winter trip with minimal avalanche danger and steep tree ski-ing.

Park at the Whistler Cemetery and follow gated road around the corner into Twenty-One mile creek. At first, you will be on an old logging road. This road turns into a trail at the point you enter the old growth forest. (See Rainbow-Madeley Trail Once on the trail, continue till just before the creek north of Mount Sproatt, and then head up into the Hanging valley north of Mount Sproatt. Shortly after leaving the trail, there is one steep little section in the trees, and then you are onto the moderate slopes of the hanging valley.

A common variation to this route is to leave the trail almost immediately that you get into the old growth, and directly head up the northeastern slopes of the peak, initially following a small creek gully. This is steeper and shorter than the hanging valley route, but is still reasonably safe from avalanches most of the time, as the steepest slopes occur when in the trees. Just the same, watch this one after a long, cold clear spell followed by a heavy dump. Such conditions often create surprisingly large slides in the trees, up to 80cm at the fracture line. (That's why these trees don't have lower branches!!)

South Coast Avalanche Forecast

Date/Time issued: Friday, April 20, 2007  at 4:00 PM
Valid until: Monday, April 23, 2007

                     Friday      Saturday   Sunday        Monday
Alpine                   Low                Low            Low                     Low
Treeline          Low               Low           Low                     Low
Below Treeline  Low            Low         Low               Low

Travel Advisory:   Typical spring conditions mean variable avalanche danger throughout the day. Daytime warming and sunshine may increase the afternoon danger to MODERATE or even CONSIDERABLE as surface instabilities develop and slabs soften. Pay attention to the air temperature and solar radiation throughout the day and when it warms up avoid steep sun exposed slopes where the snow is wet and cohesionless. Cold overnight temperatures are expected to refreeze the surface snow reducing the danger for the morning hours. As is always the case this time of year, it's best not to linger under cornices or glide cracks as these features can release unpredictably.

Avalanche Activity:   Recent reports from the Whistler area include a rider involvement high on the north slopes of Decker with limited details, and small solar-induced sloughs. Cornice and glide crack releases remain a possibility.
Snowpack:   The weakest snow will most likely be windslabs found on north slopes in the alpine and surface snow on sun-exposed slopes in the afternoon.

Weather:   A mix of sun and clouds with light winds and the chance of afternoon flurries will be the story for Friday and Saturday. A weak Pacific front is expected overnight Saturday bringing moderate southeasterly winds but minimal precipitation, especially inland. A high pressure ridge building over the region will bring generally dry and warm weather for Sunday and Monday. The daytime freezing level will be around 1200 m for Friday and Saturday and up to 1500 m or higher for Sunday and Monday, but should drop to near valley bottom overnight.
