Chance Creek Route to Cloudburst
These are instructions on how to ski up Cloudburst mountain from the Chance Creek side. This route is the most common route in early winter when there is no road access from High Falls Creek.
Turn off highway 99 and drive the Chance Creek road up to the snowcat building at 49:58.2-123:10.0. The road is usually plowed all winter. See a 10 km radius Bivouac Javamap for a diagram of the roads and the snowshed. From the shed, follow the road up the hill to the Roe Creek junction. (about 20 minutes). Keep left at all junctions. The road is good for skiing because the snowcat levels out the road. Eventually you get to a second junction in a clearcut. Head up this a short way, and then across the clearcut to the old growth trees on the south. A GPS reading in the clearcut and approaching the trees is at (49:57.8-123:13.9 and 867m. A short time later, I took a second reading just after entering the forest at 49:57.7-123:13.9.
Once in the beautiful old growth forest, climb upward through the trees. After about an hour you reach an open bowl below some steep slopes. Ascend the steep open slopes keeping to the right to minimize avalanche danger from above. Eventually you will emerge at the top of a steep section at a knotch at 1584m. From here, you are above tree line and can work |
