Sad story. But why still so many people lost with GPS?

With GPS , you should be dead on your trail , especially on the way back. Isn't ture? GPS records your track along the road.

I think I might have the answer. He must read GPS and relied on it . It showed only less than 100 meters  to get to the trailhead by crossing the creek.... I have to admit I would do the same thing myself. Think about it: 3 min vs 3 hours. 100 meter vs 5km, end of trip... What else you are going to do?  It is a sad sad accident.
