Alpen Mountain  British Columbia .
Height: 1709 m (5607 ft)above Chief George-Mamquam Pass

Located just 3 km SE of the junction of Skookum and Mamquam rivers, beween Raffuse Creek and Mamquam R. (11 km NE of Mountain Lake). (12 km E of Squamish). (14 km SW of Mamquam Mountain).

This is an ideal ski ascent peak. In addition to the peak are a series of other peaks all above treeline. There are four peaks on the ridge, from north to south 1709m,1654m,1706m, and 1702m. They stretch out over 4 km. All are just barely above treeline. The second peak from the north has been referred to as "Split Peak" because of a notch right at the summit. It could be reached via the ridge from the main peak, but most parties are out of steam upon reaching the main summit.

Alpen is the German name for the Alps. It is also a village in the district of Wesel, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is situated between the Ruhr area and the border with the Netherlands. The municipality consists of the settlements Alpen, Menzelen, Veen and B鰊ninghardt. In 2005 there were about 12.800 inhabitants. Documentary mentioned for the first time was Alpen in 1074.

Access / Route
1. From Alpen Spur Road Ski to summit. Skis. Typically done as a ski route. Drive as far up the Alpen spur till stopped by snow. Drive as far as you can, and then ski up the road and into the subalpine. To avoid snowmobiles, you can turn left onto spur road at 3600'. This takes you up an old road, then up into the subalpine. The final peak is best climbed by bypassing it with a high traverse, then getting onto the south ridge. The south ridge is tricky because there are numerous little ledges and snowdrifts. (3000' elevation gain) (4 hours)

Mamquam River Main Road:

General Route: Road runs along the south side of Mamquam River.

Markings: Distances marked with yellow mile boards, starting at mill in Squamish. Don't confuse these with distances from the turnoff from Highway 99 which are used by Bivouac waypoints.

Condition: Occasionally graded road, beginning used by 5-10 vehicles/day.

Destinations: Alpen Mountain, Indian Arm

How to Find:

How to Follow: The Mamquam River Forest Service Road (FSR) leaves Highway 99 about 1 km south of Squamish at the Apron parking lot (Stawamus Chief Provincial Park). At Mile 18 the road branches into the major east and south forks of Mamquam River. The loggers have named these E-Main and S-Main. S-Main is arbitrarily chosen as the continuation of the mainline.

Alpen Mountain spur (Mamquam P Line)

General Route: The road climbs up the NW flank of Alpen Mountain.

Destinations: Alpen Mountain, Hidden Valley Cabin




How to Find:

How to Follow: P Line leaves Mamquam Main at km 9.9 (Mile 6.75), shortly after Raffuse Creek. There is a gate at the bottom of the road. Keep left at the construction camp 200m in from the gate. From there, the main road is the only one that is not overgrown until around 1100m at Km 5. Then there is a confusing number of road forks. The road to the cabin stays on the west side of the ridge.
