CAMPFIRE & CATEGORY 3 BAN IN THE SQUAMISH - PEMBERTON AREA
PARKSVILLE – Effective at noon on Wednesday, July 23, 2008 and until further notice, campfires and Category 3 fires are banned in the Squamish Forest District area of the Coastal Fire Centre. This covers the area from just south of Lion’s Bay, north along the Sea to Sky Highway to the Joffre Lakes Provincial Park. This includes Squamish, Whistler and Pemberton surrounding area from the northern tip of Harrison Lake to D’arcy, Pemberton northwest to the headwaters of the Lillooet River; and the Callaghan, Squamish and Elaho River Valleys. This Campfire Ban and Category 3 Open Fire Restriction is added to the existing Category 1
and Category 2 Open Fire Restrictions that are in effect within this area.
This open fire ban applies within BC Parks and to all public (Crown) and private land outside of organized areas. This fire ban does not apply within municipalities or regional districts that have their own burning bylaws. Please check with your local authorities before lighting a fire.
This open fire ban is in effect to protect public safety and to limit the risk of person-caused wildfires. This ban does not restrict fires in stoves using gas, propane, or briquettes.
Category 1 and 2 open fire restrictions took effect on noon, June 25, 2008 throughout the Coastal Fire Centre until further notice.
A Category 1 open fire means an open fire that burns piled material no larger than one metre high and one metre wide. This Category 1 open fire ban prohibits the use of campfires as of July 23, 2008.
A Category 2 open fire means an open fire that burns piled material no larger than two metres high and three metres wide, or grass over an area less than 0.2 hectares (2000 square metres) in size.
A Category 3 open fire means an open fire that burns material in piles larger than two metres high and three metres wide, windrows, or grass over an larger than 0.2 hectares (2000 square metres) in size.
The Coastal Fire Centre covers all the area west of the height of land on the Coast Mountain range from the U.S./Canada border at Manning Park to Tweedsmuir Park in the north, the Sunshine Coast, the lower mainland, all of Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands.
