----Gun shop opens near scene of shooting

Rival demonstrations this weekend greeted the opening of a large hunting shop selling rifles in a tough Parisian suburb menaced by gang violence.

Local groups protested outside a new branch of Eduard Kettner's, France's largest hunting accessory retailers, only two months after a 14-year-old boy was killed with a shotgun nearby as the result of a feud between rival gangs.

But nearly 50 hunters, organised by the pro-hunting CPNT party (which stands for Chasse, Peche, Nature, et Tradition; or Hunting, Fishing, Nature and Tradition) gathered to give their support to the shop's arrival at the Tarterets housing estate in Corbeil-Essonnes, south of Paris.

More than 400 guns, mostly hunting rifles, have been put on sale at the store.

Communist and Green politicians joined with a newly-established youth group called Civil Peace and other local groups to demonstrate outside the store.

The Tarterets estate, like many high-rise estates on the outskirts of Paris, has a bad reputation in France. Street gangs frequently settle their disputes with guns and police have been attacked with stones.

In November a 14-year-old boy called Romuald was shot dead a few yards from his flat in the nearby suburb of Courconnes. He had become caught up in the gang warfare between young men living in adjoining housing estates.

After a boy from one gang was attacked by a group of 15 adolescents, a revenge expedition was launched. Romuald, who was not a member of either gang, was shot twice with a shotgun from a parked car and later died of his injuries.

Demonstrators opposing the opening of the Kettner's store argued that it could only exacerbate problems on the estate. "This shop, which has been opened right opposite the Robert-Doisneau high school in the middle of Tarterets is an incitement to violence," said Jacques Czutach, vice-president of Civil Peace. "At least two kids have been shot dead around here recently."

The Greens have called the shop a "drugstore of death", while the Communist mayoral candidate for Corbeil-Essonnes, Bruno Piriou, said: "The inhabitants of Tarterets have been waiting for years for the return of shops that they actually need, like food stores. Instead, they get a giant armoury.

"At a time marked by a rise in people using guns to settle feuds, poisoning everyday life in our area, opening a shop likes this with more than 400 guns is a real provocation."

But the director of the store, Jean-Richard Servary, said: "We've been taken hostage by politicians a few months before the municipal elections."

He estimated that only four per cent of Kettner's stores, including the new one in Corbeil-Essonnes, are devoted to guns, and that arms sales represented only 20 per cent of the firm's takings. The rest of the shop is given over to hunting accessories such as binoculars, compasses and knives, as well as clothes and shoes.

South of Tarterets is the ancient royal hunting forest of Fontainebleau, once used by kings and still popular among hunters.

The president of Kettner France, Bruno Miele, said: "Delinquency has declined in this area for three years. And what's more, we don't sell Kalashnikovs, pump-action shotguns or grenades, or any other forbidden weapons.

"Our clientele is made up of hunters who want to shoot partridges."

Mr Miele said there was no danger of his guns falling into the hands of local gangs. "We will be demanding at minimum to see the identity cards of suspicious customers."

French gun laws prohibit the sale of guns to minors. Only those who have a hunting licence are allowed to buy guns from Kettner.

Serge Dassault, the Gaullist mayor of Corbeil-Essonnes, said: "Delinquent kids will find guns if they want them. They won't need Kettner's for that."
