Medical Care outside BC:

ALEXYIM
You should be aware that your provincial coverage may not pay for all the health care costs you may incur outside the province, and the difference can be substantial. For example, B.C. pays $75 (Cdn) a day for emergency in-patient hospital care, while the average cost in the U.S. often exceeds $1000 (US) a day, and can be as high as $10,000 (US) a day in intensive care. For this reason, you are strongly advised to purchase additional health insurance from a private insurer before you leave the province, whether you are going to another part of Canada or outside the country - even if you plan to be away for only a day. See Medical Care Outside B.C. for more information.

這次backpacking在美國境內四天,美國的醫療費極昂貴。為求保障, 可考慮買旅遊保險, 以防萬一。反正我們也會常去 Mt. Baker 及 North Cascades

Food Storage

ALEXYIM
Avoid odor-tainting your backpack. Carry food and garbage in plastic bags. Avoid cooking greasy or odorous foods.

If your food is not properly stored, it may be confiscated and a $50 fine may be issued to protect visitors, property and bears.

Animal Resistant Food Containers
Bear canisters are available for loan from the WIC and some park ranger stations. A suggested $3 per canister donation helps to perpetuate the program and provide education materials.

Hard-sided food containers like bear canisters are required on the coast.

Email reply from Scott:
..........
Basically that is right  except those are way too fancy.  They should only cost about $1 each and have simple metal hooks like these ones:

To attach a bear canister you hook one end of the bungie cord through a spare loop on the back of your pack and then put it over the bear canister and then pass the cord through another loop located near the bottom of the canister, pull it tight and then hook it back through the original loop.  It is best if you have two bungie cords and you do this twice making an 'X' shape.  There may be variations on this that work better.

You can strap it onto the back of the pack or the top of the pack - whichever seems to be best.

Bear cans don't need to be hung just stored away from camp.......

Tide and Route description, tide table

Tide and Route Description from Rialto Beach to Cedar Camp for Saturday(April,7)

All distances are from Rialto Beach

+0.0km        Rialto Beach

+2.3km - +2.5km(Caution: 5 ft tide)        Hole in the wall Area, overland trail available(when hi tide approaches, use the overland trails to cross the points, rather than going around the nose of the point.)

+4.1km        Caution Area(Caution: 5 ft tide), no overland trail available

+6km        Chilean Memorial(from this Memorial, we must scramble around the cliffs and rocks of Cape Johnson, a task that requires a low 4ft tide), no overland trail available

+7.1km        Cape Johnson(Caution: 4 ft tide) , no overland trail available

+8.4km        Caution Area(Caution: 5 1/2 ft tide), no overland trail available

+10.7km        Impassible dangerous point, overland trail available(at the north end of pebbly beach is a bulbous-shaped headland where cliffs prevent a rounding at any tide, there is short, well-marked trail over the narrow neck of the headland providing access to the next beach)

+12.1km – 12.4km Caution Area(Caution: 4 ft tide), overland trail available

+14.2km        Cedar Camp

I checked all online tide tables, they only give the lowest tide/highest tide info,so I kind of just figured out the difference between high and low tide in feet and divided by the number of hours between the high and low tide and that is roughly my hourly tide.

an email from my friend Paul:

Gloria,

You're most welcome.  I have some 'just for fun' thots for you .... there are a couple of "sights" along the coast that are worth taking the time to find......

Lookout Point.  Look for the first point North of the saddle-point called "never-round" on the custom correct maps.  It's got a dilapidated cabin up on top that was pat of the 'coast-watch system' during WWII.

Starbuck Mine.  The first water coming out of the woods North of Lookout Point is Starbuck.  Therre used to be a gold mining operation there.  If you go nback into the woods on the North side of the creek and look around, you can find some of the old mining equipment.  Starbuck is also a GREAT campsite for a small group if the weather is howling.  the campsite is very sheltered.

Cedar Creek Steam Donkey.  Poke around just inside the tree line on the South side of Cedar Creek and you'll find the remains of a steam engine that was used for logging operations in the 1920's.

And of course, the Chilean and Norwegian memorials - Chilean is aobut 3 miles N of Mora, Norwegian is just inside the tree line right at the N end of the beach above Cedar Point/Cedar Creek.

Finally, the petroglyphs at Wedding Rocks, North of Sand Point will be a nice topper to the tourista interest items.

1.
