French hiker rescued from West Lions after 50-metre fall
A French hiker in his 20s is in stable condition at Vancouver General Hospital after falling nearly 50 metres off of the trail leading to The Lions.
The man was hiking with a friend Wednesday morning when he fell while traversing a ridge towards the base of the 1654-metre high West Lion.
His injuries were so serious that when rescuers arrived an advanced life support paramedic from North Shore Rescue and a doctor from Lions Bay Search and Rescue had to treat him on the mountain.
North Shore Rescue team leader Tim Jones, who coordinated the rescue, said because of the rugged terrain, rescuers had to use a helicopter to drop members in.
They also used a 150-foot rope to "long line" the victim out to Lions Bay where he was airlifted to hospital.
"He's lucky to be alive," Jones said, adding the man suffered a serious compound fracture to his ankle, lacerations, and had minor internal bleeding.
While the iconic Lions are a popular hiking destination, Jones said the trail is rugged with "tremendous exposure."
The hikers were only prepared for a hike and had no ropes, Jones said.
"Actually, the subject had his helmet attached to his belt," he said. |
