I've probably done the trail around 50 times, from May to October, and the only certainty about the weather is that it is uncertain. The best advice that one can give newbies on the trail is to plan for coastal storms for 7 continuous days and hope for the best.
And, don't underestimate the difficulty of this trail. There's a reason that 75-100 people must be evacuated from the trail each season. I equate it to driving. Some drivers go at the same speed on wet roads as they do on dry roads - can lead to tragedy! Hikers maintain a pace in wet weather that they assign to dry weather so as to meet their schedule. My experience has taught me that whatever number of days you feel that you can do the trail, add one day. If you are right on schedule and the weather is onside, then use the extra day to shorten your days, spend a day on a beach. If the weather turns bad then you will have options. |
