Exploring the coast mountain on ski--a guide to ski mountaineering " 書中有介紹這熱門地方的地形, 算是一個有雪崩機會的地方.

Singing Pass

email from Paul, Thank you for the info

Based upon the following info, you can decide what to do considering the people with no avi gear or experience. Perhaps considering the ratings at present, It’s worthwhile that the people have knowledge and gear for this area because it is rated as challenging terrain on the Avaluator for trip planning.

1.    Friday Weather Tonight.. Mountain top winds southwest 10 to 20 km/h becoming northeast 10 to 20 km/h overnight. (see below)

2.     Saturday.. Mix of sun and cloud/Alpine high - 4/Freezing level rising to 1300 metres. (solar affect)
Mountain top winds northeast 10 to 20 km/h. ( opinion: possible cross loading of the buried wind slab under the new loose snow on west slopes of Cowboy Ridge – see below)

3.       Here is the clue why they upgraded the rating which is relevant for Cowboy Ridge – Several skier accidental size one soft slabs were observed on west northwest aspects around 2000m.

4.       Loose new snow sits on wind affected surfaces in lee terrain. Isolated pockets of wind slab on solar exposed terrain are now covered by new snow.

5.    At tree line the snow is more evenly distributed over a strong melt freeze crust below 1600m

6.    The report could change either way tomorrow due to sunshine. Right now webcams show little sun today

7.    I think it is safe to say that a trip to Oboe is reasonable and then look across to Cowboy from singing pass below Oboe for recent avi signs.

8.    Although somebody’s track may look safe up Cowboy, it could still slide as a result of the next person’s weight due to the wind slab and buried melt-freeze crust being affected by the sun.

9.    Just stay off of it in mid day heat to be safe if it gets really hot out. Maybe take a longer break and head up it when the shade hits it.

10. The most valuable piece of info is the note above relating to several skier triggered size 1 soft slab slides.

11. Please check in with the Mountain Safety building/ski Patrol when you arrive at the top and let them know that you are heading out. They are aware that the group is coming.

If the condition is not safe to proceed to the hut, we may have to camp on Oboe submit or the meadow.  Probably no hot pot this time due to the uncertainy.
