Directions
Follow Highway #3 (Hope-Princeton Highway) 67 km east of Hope to the intersection with a flashing amber light just past the Manning Park Lodge. Turn left onto the road, following signs for the "sub-alpine meadows". The road travels 8 km on pavement to the Cascade Lookout and an additional 8 km on gravel to the sub-alpine meadows area. The start of the Heather Trail is located at the Blackwall Peak parking area, approximately 500 meters before the end of the road. If you reach the parking lot at the end of the road, you have gone too far.
If you wish to bypass the first km or so of this trail that runs entirely through the trees, you can take the PAINTBRUSH trail (other side of the road, across from ticket dispenser) around to the microwave tower, past the viewpoint and down where it rejoins the Heather Trail. This method is more open and may be more appealing in the early morning hours!
The road has two gates - one at the start near Highway #3, and another at the Cascade Lookout. The road is usually closed during the winter, early spring, and late autumn. A parking pass is required for the area - either an annual BC Parks pass or a $3 daily pass paid using the machines at the parking lots. The machines accept only loonies and quarters - toonies and credit cards will not work, so come prepared before the long drive to the top.
Details
(Nicomen Lake Details) FROM THE EAST: Start at the Heather Trail trailhead and follow the Heather Trail west, which is mostly level save for a few rises and dips, to Nicomen Lake. There is a fair bit of a rise beyond Buckhorn Camp at km4 (1000 foot elevation gain) and a fair loss of elevation past the last brother, after a small pass is crossed and the descent to Kicking Horse Camp is made. After Kicking Horse camp, the trail rises again and follows the ridge towards Nicomen Lake, but not before dropping some 200 metres from the ridge down to the lake. There is good camping with a rough lean-two shelter and a few firepits towards the far end of the lake.
There's also a number of wooden platforms for tenting that are found alongside of the lake.
From the east along the Heather Trail, it's probably best to spend the first night at Kicking Horse Camp, as doing the whole thing in one shot is pretty long, unless you are quite fit and packing light.
In early summer, many beautiful meadows filled with wildflowers are crossed. Water sources will becme scarcer as the snow disappears. Much of the trail is exposed, so do be sure to take alot of sunscreen along.
The trail is in reasonably good shape and is easy to follow.
Trail starts at Blackwall Peak parking lot and follows fire access road for 5 km to Buckhorn Camp. From here the trail winds up through an old burn area and then across gently rolling terrain. At 10 km the trail reaches the foot of the First Brother Mountains until Kicking Horse Camp is reached. The trail then continues to Nocomen Ridge. Return the same way or continue along Grainger Creek Trail to Hope Pass Trail. Follow Hope Pass Trail to Cayuse Flats on Highway 3.
Info from Bivouac:
Heather Trail
Condition: Beaten path, easy to follow.
General Route: From the Blackwall Peak parking lot, it heads north along gentle ridgetops through alpine meadows and open forests to Nicomen Lake. The farther north you go on the trail, the less traffic you will encounter. The position of the trails is shown on mapsheet 92 H/2.
Markings: Only sporadic km markers, but the trail is dead easy to follow when it's not obscured by snow. All major junctions are signed. km 0 is the lower parking lot at Blackwall Peak.
How to Follow: From Nicomen Lake, trails connect north to Hope Pass, and west to Highway 3 via Grainger Creek and the Skaist River.
Big Buck Mountain, Three Brothers Mountain and Fourth Brother Mountain are all easy (non technical) side trips from the main trail. Reaching the summits of Big Buck Mountain, the Third Brother and the Fourth Brother require a little off trail hiking through the meadows and forest.
There are three campsites along the trail. All have accessible water sources and are equipped with outhouses. Kicking Horse and Buckhorn Campsites have wooden tent platforms.
