We hope you are getting ready for a fun and exciting summer, because Parks Canada sure is!
Today, May 19th, Parks Canada is celebrating its 100th anniversary as the world’s first national park service!
Celebrations will be happening from coast to coast at national parks, national historic sites and national marine conservation areas to mark Parks Canada’s centennial this summer. Vancouver will be one of the celebration centres, with a number of events happening throughout the Vancouver region.
Upcoming highlights:
May 23– Parks Canada Centennial Celebrations Weekend at Fort Langley National Historic Site
Explore new exhibits and celebrate Parks Canada's centennial with a slice of cake this long weekend at the birthplace of BC! On May 23, look for our Centennial float in the 89th Annual May Day Parade in downtown Fort Langley, and explore the farmers’ market. Free admission to the Fort on May 23rd! May Long Weekend – end of July – Parks Canada’s Centennial Street Banners!
Street banners showcasing Parks Canada's Centennial will be displayed from May 20th until the end of July on Vancouver's busy Georgia Street in the downtown core. The three designs encourage people to be inspired by their national parks, immersed in their national marine conservation areas, and connected to their national historic sites.
May to August – Parks Canada Presents: Beaver Tales Theatre
Watch for Parks Canada's exciting, educational new theatre troupe at the hottest events this summer. Join the wacky antics of Justine the Beaver and Fingers the Raccoon for some tail-slapping fun! All performances are free and are guaranteed to delight kids and adults of all ages. Shows will be held across the Lower Mainland.
June 10, 7-10pm- Canada’s National Protected Areas: Our Gift to the World Mountain Equipment Co-op: 130 West Broadway, Vancouver
Admission is Free. Seating is Limited.
Parks Canada’s award-winning historian and author, Lyle Dick, shares the story of Parks Canada, the world’s first national park service, in celebration of our 100th birthday.
June 18-19 – Learn to Camp
Parks Canada and Mountain Equipment Co-op, with the support of local partners, present an interactive Learn to Camp event for families who may have never been camping before. 100 new campers will experience setting up camp, outdoor activities and sleeping in a tent overnight. The event will be held in the Fort Langley area, near the Fraser River.
July 1 – Canada Day
Join us for free admission and special programming at all National Parks and National Historic Sites on Canada Day.
July 16 – Celebrate Canada's Parks Day in Vancouver!
Come celebrate Parks Canada’s 100th year as the world’s first national park service in one of Vancouver’s most beloved places, Stanley Park. Join us at Brockton Point for a fun-filled family day of festivities from noon to 6 pm and a free outdoor concert from 6 pm to 9 pm.
Join us for free admission and special programming at all National Parks and National Historic Sites on Parks Day.
