The Prince was rescued with an avalanche beacon; not a 406Mhz Personal locator beacon. The links you have posted refer to 406Mhz PLBs which are satellite beacons. they are not designed to work under snow, but if activated by the user can transmit through 1m of snow. He was skiing in a group andwas rescued by rescuers with other avalanche locator beacons. Thes beaconsare specific to avalanche rescue.
