Must-Know Moose Calls
This Must-Know Moose Calls video is a supplement to the "Must-Know Moose Calls" article by Alex Gouthro published in the 2012 September Hunting Annual edition of the Ontario Out of Doors magazine. The video is designed so that readers can hear the moose calls discussed in the article and also see some exciting bull moose responses to calling.
How to Make a Moose Call
Even if you never call in a 60-inch bull, you’ll be able to impress your hunting buddies with your backwoods acumen when you pull out your handmade moose call. This is how veteran moose hunter and Canadian guide John Rivet makes his. If this is too much work, you can go to Rivet’s website and get one the old-fashioned way: by purchasing it.
1 Go out during early spring, before the leaves pop out and when the sap is flowing, and find a birch tree that is 9 inches in diameter—one that is stunted, if possible—in an overgrown grove.
2 Make an I-shaped cut through the bark, with the vertical cut being about 19 inches long. The bark will peel away very easily if it doesn’t actually spring off of its own accord.

Q:How to make a moose caller out of a coffee can? A:Really easy - pierce the bottom of the can with a nail and feed a 3 foot long cotton string through. Make a knot on the end inside the can, wet the string, and pull it tight to the knot. Pulling the string tight, use your thumbnail to scrape the wet string...it should make low grunts if you do it quickly, or if you make long strokes, it sounds like a female mating call.
