It's spring, and the best-known hibernators in the world are waking up.
There have been a few recent bear sightings on the North Shore, notably
around Eagle Bluffs, so it's time once more to remind yourself about how to
deal with a bear encounter. The MEC blog has a summary article which is
worth a read:

But the threat of bear encounters should not stop you from venturing into
the backcountry. Craig and Kathy Copeland (authors of several
wonderfully-opinionated hiking guides) recently posted an article on their
blog about the psychological side of dealing with potential bear
encounters. They also have a 30-minute podcast if you want something to
listen to as you ride the bus into work or head up the Grind. They focus on
the Canadian Rockies and on grizzly encounters in particular, but the
advice is applicable to all wilderness areas. Of course, there are
grizzlies in the Coast Mountains, especially beyond Pemberton and into the
Chilcotins.

Get out there, enjoy yourself and be bear aware.
