Moguls, also called Bumps, are humps or mounds of Snow which are developed
when skiers perform turns on the same slope. They can increase in number, as

Moguls or Bumps are evident in all Ski Areas. Though there are slopes
without Bumps, there will come a time when this area will be soon filled with
Bumps formed by skiers who are making turns on the same slope. Eventually, you
will have to ski around and over them. Therefore, it is imperative to know
how to deal with Bumps. Take a look at some basic techniques to aid you as
you get started in Bump Skiing:
Know how to turn over bumps. This is one of the important things you should
keep in mind. To make turns over Bumps, start with a good traverse stance
and begin skiing. When you get near the Bump, bend your hips and apply
pressure on your outside Ski. At the time when your are passing over the top
of the Bump, plant your Ski Pole on the Bump's edge in order to give support
as
you extend your legs, direct your Skis in the new path, and finally turning
over the Bump. At this point, you are already on the other side of the Bump.
Finish the turn by shifting your weight and applying pressure on your
downhill Ski.
To make turns around small Moguls scattered on easy and intermediate slopes
, start with a good traverse stance. Shift your weight on your downhill Ski,
and then ski. When you get near a Mogul, get ready in planting your
downhill Ski Pole on its front side. Turn around the Bump and make sure to
shift your weight on your outside Ski. Quickly push your hand forward after
planting
your Ski Pole on the Bump in order to pull your arm through. Turn around
the Mogul completely and try this Drill again, this time in other direction.
Practice turning on small Bumps and if you already feel confident, you can
move on in making turns around slightly bigger Moguls on steep slopes.
To make a swivel turn, stand on a Mogul and merely lower your hips. Take
note that the Tips and Tails of Skis should not be touching the Snow. As
another important guideline, keep your Skis close to each other as you turn
over the Bump. Push your shins forward and turn your upper body towards the
course of the turn. At this point, plant your Ski Pole down the fall- line so
that you will tend to reach downhill. Make sure that it stays vertical as you
turn. Extend your legs and rotate your feet.
Generally speaking, there is no Bump- free Ski area. Thus, learning the
fundamental skills in Mogul Skiing is very important. You also need some
once you become skillful in Mogul Skiing.
Everyone can learn how to ski Moguls. You just need to understand a couple
of things and some basic maneuvers in order to master Mogul Skiing. However,
problems are inevitable, especially for novices in Mogul Skiing. Get
familiar of the common problems skiers face when skiing Bumps and learn how to
solve them:
Problem1: Not having the proper techniques
Before you go Mogul Skiing, it is important that you are able to make solid
turns in groomed Snow Ski Surface. But you need more than that in order to
ski Bumps.
Solution/s: One of the techniques you need to learn as you go Bump Skiing is
how to make short- radius turns correctly. Recall the basics in edging and
steering. Being able to skid is important in Mogul Skiing. It should be easy
for you to let your Skis to slide in order to turn your Skis across the
fall- line and control speed.
Problem2: Stance is too upright
Though you are taught to have an upright position when hitting gentle slopes
, it will be hard for you to ski Bumps if your back is too straight because
the tendency is to throw yourself backward when skiing with speed and taking
up the Bumps.
Solution/s: Lower your hips and make sure that your upper body is flexed a
little forward. With this position, you will not find yourself tossed
backward when you are skiing quickly.
Problem3: Legs and knees are too rigid
This is a common fault committed by some skiers. This is usually the case
for scared skiers. You will be surely thrown in the air if you are skiing with
speed and hit a Bump.
Solution/s: Relax - that's basically what you need to do. To keep your knees
bent, relax, lower your hips, and then lean forward, touching the fronts of
your Ski Boots.
Problem4: Skiing equipment is not suitable to the demands of the sport
If you already check your ability in Skiing and still experience problems,
take a look at your Skis and Ski Boots. They may be inappropriate in Mogul
Skiing.
Solution/s: Make sure that your Skis are not stiff. They are not suitable to
Mogul Skiing since they will make it hard for you to turn over and around
Bumps. Do not try using fat Skis. Their wide Tips will be bounced around as
you ski in Moguls. Shaped Skis with less radical sidecut and softer-flexing
can do the work in Bumps.
Stiff Skis alone will make Mogul Skiing difficult, but a combination of
stiff Skis and Ski Boots is worse. Make sure that yours is not stiff, just
like
the Skis.
It is beneficial if you are familiar with the possible scenarios you may
face as you go Mogul Skiing. Know the common problems of most skiers when
skiing in Bumps. In the likely event that you experience these, you already
know what to do. |
