Holden Village
Hello Xiao C,
Greetings from the Village.
Thanks for your interest in hiking through Holden this summer. As you may know, an extensive mine remediation project directed by the U.S. Forest Service in cooperation with the Washington Department of Ecology and the EPA has begun around the Village. While we were able to offer daily transportation and campground service to hikers in 2012, that will not be the case for the next two summers, 2013 and 2014, when the project will be in full swing. During the construction season (April through November), Holden will provide transportation for hikers only on Saturdays and Sundays. August 2, a Friday, will not be a transport day, but August 3 or 4 would be possible. Reservations are required for the transport, so be sure and contact us when you have an exact number of people and date. Neither overnight accommodations nor meals will be available during this construction season, so we can offer only transportation from Lucerne to Holden Village, where you will begin your hike. The cost is $10 per person each way.
In the past you may have camped at Holden’s campground near the ball field and hiked in to take part in Holden activities. This summer Holden’s campground near the ball field will be closed due to work and construction activities in that area, and while we don’t yet know the status of the Forest Service campground, the site is adjacent the construction work area and will not be conducive to a fun camping trip. For safety reasons hikers will not be allowed in the construction areas which will include many areas of the Village itself.
