I got a few emails from several people expressing appreciation of the above advices, you are all welcome. Instead of individual emails back, I put here one more: pay attention to your surroundings when above tree line. Weather forecast calls for "..Risk of a thunderstorm in the afternoon...". This is very rare, but it does happen, I know people on this forum who actually have been through this, myself included: if you start feeling funny noticing your partner's hair stands up, do not start taking photos, instead you need immediately drop down elevation, and do it quick. Electric charge accumulated in the air and ready to be discharged any time. Drop at once all sharp objects, especially those in your hands (trekking poles or ice ax). Better yet, drop on the ground and crawl like a snake. Once it starts striking around (or on) you it is not fun anymore. 8)
In the photo: urgent descend in the middle of lightning storm on Slalok Mtn ( he can't drop the ice ax, obviously, he needs it, and he can't crawl, it's too steep ). Forecast had 60% chance of thunderstorm that day, but we (mostly blaming me as the leader) ignored it. Luckily we haven't reached the summit when it started banging on it with tremendous flashes. Upper left on the photo, hardly visible vertical steam trace, probably result of one of the strikes.
