Alpine Tip #17

TRIP STATUS: GO

Weather is calling for -25C at the destination camping spot, that is the summit of Vantage Peak (2,235m asl). Come prepared.

Alpine Tip #17: It is not the outside air temperature that makes you cold, but the lack of proper clothes and skills to stay warm.

At this cold:
17.1 Be very skeptical about your cartridge-based stove such as Jetboil, etc. It may refuse to work.
17.2 Batteries discharge a lot faster, bring more extra.
17.3 Camera probably will freeze as well, unless kept next to the body.
17.4 Overnight, boots will freeze brick-solid and in the morning it will be impossible even to work out laces. Keep boots inside your sleeping bag. Bring 2 plastic bags for that.
17.5 Do not unfold, unzip your down sleeping  bag until you are ready to get inside it to sleep. Otherwise it will acquire outside temp (-25C) and it will take you hours to get warm. This is because the purpose of the bag is to keep the inside temperature, so ironically the better the sleeping bag the longer it will take to get warm.
17.6 Human head is responsible for losing 30% of the body heat, so before putting on another jacket, make sure your head is properly covered.
17.7 Your emergency bivi can improve your sleeping bag rating by extra -3C.

天气变冷了,要注意保暖唷!

明天见! 恭喜发财! 8)

一切都顺利。大家安全回家了。

Looks like weather people were right saying it will be below -25C. Can't confirm for sure though, both thermometers that we brought all refused to work at the camp site. They still work fine in my home freezer, and down in the valley of Cerise Creek noon time they showed -15C. 8)

认证的草鸟

2,000m asl, just below Vantage Peak (and well above Vantage Col). Waist-deep snow, -20C, the 40lb backpack, only 50 minutes daylight left, but still smiling.

那么名副其实认证的草鸟! 8)

Alpine Tip 18: Attaching tent to the snow

Alpine Tip 18
Attaching tent to the snow - reliable snow anchor.

Camping in winter on ridges or summits? Then forget about using supplied tent pegs, or your tent one day will fly away, possibly with you inside.

We use home-made snow anchors made from a trekking pole.

P.S. Those who doubted the strength of this anchor were offered to pull it out off the snow next morning. Nobody ever succeeded to extract it easily without tools and much swearing. Convincing. 8)

Bonus tip: to strengthen the anchor even more, pour some water on top of it, so it will freeze into a solid ball.

Alpine Tip 7: Have packing list

Alpine Tip 7: Have packing list

Have you once forgot a memory card for your camera or another (important) thing to bring on a trip? In a hurry of busy life it is easy. I personally have seen people forget their lunches, gloves, ice axes, boots, crampons, helmets, climbing harnesses. Here is how to avoid embarrassment and hatred from your buddies for ruining their fun.

1. IT IS SIMPLE! Keep packing list.
2. Pre-pack - lay all things from the list on one spot.
3. Final Pack - Touch Check: physically touch all things from the list.
4. After each trip update the list - remove things not needed. Add items you missed. After 10 trips or so you will become a pro packing in no-time.

Proper packing list process ensures you won't have surprise at the trailhed realizing  that you forgot your lunch, trekking poles, sun glasses, credit card / cash to pay for gas, hiking boots, helmet, crampons ( all that actually did happen to some people at some point in the past ). 8)
