TRIP STATUS: CANCELLED

Just released new weather update is not looking good.

"..There is a 96% probability of heavy sleet and snowfall, light snowfall..."

http://www.viewweather.com/w7929 ... itish_columbia.html

To be rescheduled. 8)

Conditions Update: We have just entered a normal shoulder season, so trips to local hills will have to wait a bit. Sun, warm temps, dangerous swollen creeks and lot of snow still above 1,100 m, which is soft and moist, almost slush. "Unstable" is a polite word to describe it. If you slide nothing will stop you. Ice axe, crampons are of no use. Postholing and tree wells are typical for this time. Slopes are loaded with potential to wet slides that can kill. Not that I would call fun. Will wait till snow is gone and surface dry. Mid-June or so. Be safe. 8)

Much higher up alpine such as of Manning Park is affected by warm days too.

There are major slide paths that cross the trail and pretty much all of them have fresh debris and broken trees, even some large trees. So it looks like there has been a significant destructive avalanche cycle this spring. I was disappointed in the snow conditions. The weather was a lot warmer than forecast and there was significant danger from loose, wet snow avalanches especially on higher terrain above 2000 meters.

Conditions Update: Sun is out makes snow reactive. Alpine is very unstable. Be safe 8)

Photo taken May-15 2014: Human-triggered avalanche conditions are rated as "High Avalanche Danger". A wide slide triggered by a snowshoer illustrates the point. This time the luck was on their side, it didn't start above them or a rescue helicopter trip to hospital would likely follow ( emergency room or a morgue ). Note that the snow keeps sliding as the second person crosses sun-exposed snow-loaded traverse. Russian roulette indeed.

From the "Scrambles" book, page32/33:

..sub summit..separated from the West Lion by a gap in the ridge. This is the point at which hikers without mountain experience should stop...

..difficult, exposed traverses..significant exposure. A person died falling off in the past.."

Hiking to the ridge from Lions Bay takes approximately four hours and gains 1,280 m (4,199 ft) in elevation. Most hikers stop there as both the East and West Lion peaks require rock climbing equipment and expertise.

不好意思,既然没有人表达参加的兴趣,我已改变过周末的计划。下一次吧! 8)
