Camped on the summit of Mount Unnecessary with superb views of Howe Sound, sunset and sunrise.

Distance: 7.4 km
Start Elevation: 915 m
Summit Elevation: 1,530 m
Elevation Gain: 1,027 m
Elevation Drop: 412 m

"Just in case" we brought short 20m climbing rope, ice tools, crampons and a few carabiners, all of which unexpectedly had to use. Leaving helmets home was not a very good idea, some large icicles kept falling from the warming trees. 8)

Most of the time hikers arrive at the summit noon time and soon leave back where they came from. That's when the sun is high, light is too harsh and time is limited. Soft low-angle light is a lot better for landscape and other types of photo, but almost never is seen up high. This changes if we get to spend the night on the summit. Then we have two gentle low-angle light periods (sunset and sunrise), plus plenty of time. Winter especially is good for this as no need to worry about flat camping spot and water. ( + no bugs! ) 8)
