Question: "Handguns should be banned. Gun violence will be reduced if handguns are banned."
Ans: "Actually no that's not true. Handguns are the weapon of choice for criminals, 90% of criminal handguns are obtained illegally from the US, which means it's simply more convenient to obtain an handgun illegally 90% of the time. We can all agree that prohibition will not stop a criminal intent on disobeying the law.
But the tool used by a killer is a red herring. Certain countries have larger gun ownership than Canada and yet do not have gun massacres. Other countries have almost total gun bans, and still have school massacres (eg. China). Canada itself does not experience gun massacres like in the US. The cause of gun massacres in the US can be attributed to mental illness (almost all gun massacres involved shooters who were either on Prozac, Ritalin or a similar anti-depressant), or income inequality, or social inequality. If we're serious about tackling homicide in the US, then we must look at root causes.
A handgun is just a tool. It's obviously useful because police carry them, and it's useful for women to protect themselves for the same reason. It's also useful for people going into the deep woods for protection against dangerous animals. Canadian law allows concealed carry under certain conditions, so even the law recognizes that handguns are useful."
