Hiking to the peak of Vancouver
If I am asking which mountain is most famous in Vancouver, I believe most people will choose Grouse Mountain as the answer. Grouse Mountain, the peak of Vancouver has a famous trail, Grouse Grind, local people call it “GG”, it also often referred to as "Mother Nature's Stairmaster." This rigorous 2.9 km (1.8 mile) hike takes you straight up the face of Grouse Mountain.
(GG history and some facts:)
Thirty years ago, the Grind didn't exist. Hacked out of the Pacific rain forest in the late 1970s, the trail -- conceived originally as a training course for aspiring mountaineers -- was the brainchild of Don McPherson and Phil Severy. These two local climbers set about building it themselves. Interesting about that is with neither permission nor help from the land's owners, the Greater Vancouver Regional District. Soon initial displeasure turned to commercial glee.
The Grind's infamy grew and word spread. Today aspiring grinders continue to come in droves, more than 150,000 a year at last count, peaking at a rate of more than 5,000 people per day during the busier summer months.
Climbers, fun runners, families, friends and work parties -- the committed and the curious lining up alongside the mad -- or just plain masochistic -- sports shoes doubled-knotted and stopwatches at the ready.
Some gluttons for punishment, unhappy with their first ascent time, have been known to tackle the trail twice in the same day. Others, like local hockey professionals the Vancouver Canucks, have incorporated it as part of their preseason training routine.
First-time hiker should adhere to a number of safety principles before setting out.
1. Wearing a pair of sport shoes, hiking boots are even better. No street shoes allowed.
The trail is steep in places. And It is a collection of actual steps and step-like rocks and tree roots, which is sometimes more difficult than a regular trail because of loose rocks or strange footings. Although one girlfriend wore her high heal for the first-time climbing, like dancing on the tree roots, it took her 3 hours finish the trial. It is also very dangerous. You need make sure step on the right spots to balance yourself. Leather shoes is not also a good idea, some first-time hiker thinks GG as park tour.
2.Bring adequate supply of water and energy bar with you.
Pacing is vital, it is easy to sweat, you need water to supply your body need. Imaging you finish your water before first quarter, I don’t think you can do further without water. I had a friend visit me from Edmonton, on the trailhead, he told me it shouldn’t be a big deal because he was very good at hiking when he was in the university. But after 10 minutes later, he sweat a lot and I sat there and watched him to finish all his water. Then both of us decided we should head back instead of continuing ascending. For the first-time, energy bar is also important because you don’t know how long it will take you to the top of the mountain.
3.Take a friend with you
Take a friend with you if you can. It would be better if your friend have done that before. You can get help from friend when you need, especially when you feel exhausted and started to swear the damn trail. The first-time I am doing the GG,My friend encourage me all along the trail. When we finally see the one quarter mark on the trail, I was thinking: my gosh, still have 3 quarters to go. I was dying. My friend told me the first-part is most difficult part, the left is much easier than it. If I can do this part, I can handle the left parts as well. With these sweat words, I decided keep on going. Though the fact is not true, I don’t blame him. Without those, I won’t finish the trail easier and the most important part is he carried all my water and bag
4.Bring a light jacket and enough cash
Bring a light jacket in case it is windy at the top of mountain, after this hard workout and sweating a lot, t is easier to catch a cold in wind. There has a restaurant there and gift shop and coffee bar there, you can buy rewarding beer and cheeseburger while you enjoy spectacular views and cherish all that you accomplished. You do deserve those rewarding after you make it to the top.
Lastly, don't forget an extra $5 for the return ride down Grouse Mountain's famous gondola.
Enjoy it and challenge yourself
By the way, someone told me this info is not encouraging for the first-time climber, they won't try after read this :) :) |
