CASTLE TOWERS MTN - SUMMIT DAY TRIP NOTES

1. Base camp was @ Helm Creek Cg
1. Distance to the summit: 19.6 km return
2. Total Elevation Gain: 1,850 m
3. There is no trail except initial 800m.
4. Helm Glacier was snow free in most places, ice only, wide and deep open cracks with some sunk weak snow bridges (trek pole easily punched a hole)
5. Upon return we had to cross Helm Glacier at night (not recommended). There was no moon.

No trail, still OK - even at night walking on this soft surface was not difficult. Assisted by a GPS in hand I mean. 8)

More serious than one would think, especially after finding this route among "scrambles" routes. Personally I never expected it to be in such complex intimidating shape - it is "just" a scrambling route, no? Still, we came fully prepared, gear and training (for some students, Alpine Workshops was not a particularly easy learning curve) :)

Alpine Scrambles.. reached without the need for certain types of climbing equipment (body harness, rope, protection hardware, etc), and not involving travel on extremely steep slopes or on glaciers.
