IF YOU GO
Silver Star Mountain Resort (winter.skisilverstar.com) is about 12 miles northeast of Vernon, British Columbia. Many fly into Kelowna International Airport, 40 miles to the south. For drivers, the resort is 358 miles from Seattle (roughly six-and-a-half-hours). If you plan to remain at Silver Star, no rental car is needed; take a shuttle to and from the resort, which is a discounted 89 Canadian dollars (about the same in U.S. dollars) round-trip if booked through Silver Star Holidays; 800-663-4431.
THE CAMP
XC Supercamps are held several times each year late November to early February. (The season’s final camps are Feb. 20 to 22.) The two-and-a-half-day camps start at 314 Canadian dollars and include morning coaching daily, trail passes, hot lunch daily and post-skiing talks. The five-day camps start at 769 dollars and include morning coaching, passes, lunches, two massages and a spa trip and dinner at Swarovski-crystal-infused Sparkling Hill Resort. Add-ons include bargain-priced afternoon instruction, more massage and a biathlon (shooting!) option; 250-503-7758; xcsupercamp.com.
WHERE TO STAY
Perhaps the most comfortable of a number of options is the slopeside Snowbird Lodge, whose high-end apartments (studios to three-bedroom suites) have their own hot tubs; laundry (most units); and Wi-Fi. Many units also have full kitchens. Rates begin at 174 dollars plus tax; 800-663-4431.
WHERE TO EAT
When it comes to dining, Silver Star is no Aspen. For breakfast, have a good cappuccino (3.95 dollars) and croissant (1.95 dollars) at Bugaboos Bakery Cafe (250-545-3208) on Silver Star’s Main Street, run by Frank Bergers. For dinner, try the Den Bar and Bistro (250-558-6032) across Main Street for entrees like herb-crusted lamb rump with rosti and mushrooms (29 dollars). |
