Suicide Bluffs rescue
--------------------------
The North Shore may not have much snow, but it's still winter: the days are
short and conditions are highly variable. North Shore Rescue was called out at
the weekend to rescue a group of 5 that got lost after dark on the Suicide
Bluffs trail. Fortunately of their four cell phones, one had enough charge to
make contact and to allow NSR to use that phone to obtain their position. Read

Remember the Ten Essentials, give yourself plenty of time and don't
underestimate the conditions - wear appropriate clothing and footwear.
There is one additional note of caution about cell phones from this story. While
they are vital for communication, they are also the only camera for many people.
The more they're used, the more the battery gets drained. Make sure your phone
is fully charged at the beginning of the hike (keep it charging in your car
until you set off) and minimize its use while hiking. Ideally, take a separate
camera and leave your phone turned off. Alternatively, if part of a group, it
may be a good idea for one person to leave their phone untouched in case of
emergency. |
