Looking good and informative too: both bivy site and ice on the Victoria route. One can even see the lights of the Abbot Pass Hut (just at the the col Lefroy-Victoria south)! Any chance to share GPS file of the route? or at least coordinates of the bivy? We are planning to follow OpenStreetMap track, supposedly it is the standard one. Thanks in advance! 8)[/quote]
We don't have the GPS track, but the route is pretty straightforward. Basically you follow the trail to the Plain of Six Glaciers Teahouse. Then go further along the trail leading to the Pain of Six Glacier viewpoint. Almost inmediately you will cross a large wash gully coming down from right side. As soon as you cross the wash gully, turn RIGHT, following a faint trail which becomes much clearer after the first 50-100m or so. The trail then switches back and forth as it climbs up the mountain. Follow the trail until it tops out. The bivy site is at the toe of the glacier. You won't miss it.
Once on the glacier, generally climb upwards, detouring on climber's left from times to avoid some rock bands. Once you see the col between Mt Collie and Mt Victoria North Peak, aim the col. Once on the col, there is a choice of the rock route or ice route. On the ice route, rock fall is a serious concern. On the day we climbed, there were both rock falls triggered by other climbers and by itself. The rock route is a much safer option. |
