Scrambling covers that area of mountain exploration that goes beyond hiking but
avoids the need for technical climbing gear. But it is not an activity that
should be ventured into lightly, and a number of popular hikes involve some
scrambling. A loose definition could be that if you need to use your hands to
help you travel then you're scrambling. But it's more than that - scrambling
frequently ventures into terrain where there is no trail so good route-finding
and terrain-assessment skills are also vital.
