Mount Baker stands at 10,781 feet (3,286 meters) and is the third-highest mountain in Washington State. It has a prominence of 8,800 feet (2,682 meters), making it one of the most prominent peaks in the contiguous United States.
Mount Baker is an active stratovolcano and is considered one of the most heavily glaciated volcanoes in the Cascade Range. It last erupted in 1880, and though it has been relatively quiet since, it remains closely monitored for signs of renewed activity.
The most popular route for climbing Mount Baker is the Coleman-Deming route, which is typically accessed from the Heliotrope Ridge trailhead. Other notable routes include the Easton Glacier route and the North Ridge route, which is known for being more technical.
Mount Baker is home to the second largest glacier system in the contiguous United States, with over a dozen major glaciers. The Coleman Glacier and the Easton Glacier are the two largest and are frequently traversed by mountaineers.
The best time to climb Mount Baker is typically from June to August when the weather is more stable, and the snow conditions are favorable. Early in the season, climbers need to be cautious of avalanche hazards, while later in the season, crevasses can become more exposed and challenging to navigate.
The first recorded ascent of Mount Baker in Washington was accomplished on August 17, 1868, by Edmund T. Coleman, an Englishman and experienced mountaineer. Coleman was accompanied by four Lummi Native Americans and a team of climbers: John Tennant, Thomas Stratton, and David Ogilvy.

At the summit of Jimmy Junior Peak, Banff NP, ABFor some reason, my phone failed to keep track of our previous climb (which was not a problem in 2021). As a result, we went straight up and got lost just below the ridge, entering more technical terrain than expected for Class 2 (namely a rock band). On the descent, we chose not to descend the rock band (we had no helmets, expecting Class 2). However, my previously beloved GPS watch (Garmin Instinct 2) froze, rendering the GPX track useless. Luckily, I had turned on backup tracking on my phone (just in case), which saved us from a lot of potential despair trying to get back into the right gully. I was very disappointed with Garmin—it turned out to be just a fancy, expensive gadget for indoor cardio, no more than that.

On this day, September 8, 2013 (11 years ago), we had our first backpacking trip together. Little did we know that we would climb over 450 peaks together in the next 11 years, including the mighty Denali, the highest in North America, in Alaska—not to mention climbs in BC, Alberta, the USA, Japan, Taiwan, France, and Switzerland.
