The storm that brought all the snow which caused the avalanche rating to
increase last weekend also produced a torrent of rain. It can take a day or
so for the runoff to swell the creeks, so be aware of that if you head out
after a big storm.

(Don't even think of getting too close to Gold Creek Falls in these
conditions!)
Of course, it means that now is a great time to do a waterfall hike,
especially for some of those that are less spectacular at other times of
year (I'm looking at you Norvan Falls). At least one popular local
waterfall hike requires a creek crossing which would be not worth the risk
at the moment. Enjoy the waterfalls, but please take care around the banks
of creeks right now. Not only will the rocks and roots be extra slippery,
but the high flow will undercut the banks which may cause them to collapse. |
