Respecting closures
------------------------
by Bob Manson, North Shore Rescue
"Please respect trail closures and stay out of closed areas. Some trails in
the North Shore area are closed over the winter due to winter conditions
that present a host of hazards. Many of these hazards cannot be protected
against with simple personal protective equipment. Boulder fields, for
example, are formed by boulders crashing down from the slopes above and
this time of year sees more of that sort of activity. Some closed areas are
also very remote and rescue efforts may take many hours to reach a stranded
or injured party, and only after it has been determined that it is safe for
rescuers to enter the area. Some trails and areas are also outside cell
phone coverage and as a result, you will not be able to call for help that
way if you get into trouble. Trail closures may also happen at other times
of the year in response to fire hazard or even wildlife activity.
Check various web sites to find out if your trail is closed and if it is,
please find another place to hike and come back when the trail is open.
In order to be safe in the outdoors your best plan is to be resilient and
stay out of trouble. Staying off closed trails and out of closed areas can
help." |
