St Mark's Rescue
---------------------
A group of hikers became separated at the weekend which led to a call to
North Shore Rescue. Fortunately, one of the lost hikers was able to
rediscover the trail but the other ended up in a steep gully and had to be
rescued by helicopter.

To give you an idea of the magnitude of search tasks, and how difficult it
can be to spot people on the ground, check out this article in the North
Shore News that shows a picture of the location of the rescued hiker.

Please don't let this happen to you. Stick together, and stick to the
trail. Research your trip beforehand and always carry the ten essentials.
Note that the trail to St Mark's is not marked in the winter and current
snow depths may hide the summer trail markers. In addition, the trail
crosses multiple avalanche paths and shouldn't be attempted when the
avalanche danger is elevated. |
