Learning from SAR incident summaries
-----------------------------------------
Last year there were over 1600 callouts for search and rescue in BC. That's
more than 4 per day. A natural question to ask is, are there common aspects
to these callouts and, if so, what can be learned from them?
To answer those (and other) questions, Steve Jones read through all 1600+
SAR incident reports covering April 2017 to March 2018. (If his name is
familiar it's because we've featured his writing about winter backcountry
access at Cypress.)
This is a must-read for anyone who ventures into the backcountry,
especially with respect to satellite messaging devices and injuries. In
many cases, advance preparation and being aware of conditions would seem to
go a long way to preventing a callout.
Steve finishes off with an argument for consistent funding for SAR
organizations.
