In 1990, UNESCO add the palaces and parks of Potsdam and Berlin to its list of World Heritage Sites. This section of the route ends at the Brandenburg Gate in the centre of Berlin.

While the Elbe is only the second longest river in Germany, it is definitely the number one river among cycle tourists. Immediately beyond the German-Czech border, the river is greeted by the sandstone cliffs of Saxon Switzerland National Park. The route passes through the Elbe valley, amidst romantic, rugged scenery. The world-famous Semperoper opera house and reconstructed Frauenkirche church can be visited in Dresden. The route northwards is characterised by wetlands, and passes through countless fascinating towns that are rich in history. Torgau is one such town. It marks the point where the American and Russian forces met shortly before the end of the Second World War. Torgau is the symbol of the defeat of the German Empire in 1945. In the Lutheran town of Wittenberg, it is possible to follow in the footsteps of the great reformer, Luther.

The route connects two European rivers (Danube and Elbe) via the Moldau river. It passes the picturesque UNESCO town of Cesky Krumlov. The best section of the Moldau river route is past České Budějovice and château Hluboká n/Vltavou. After Týn n.Vltavou the route leaves the river and joins it again before Prague due to the cascade of water dams built on Moldau. After Prague the route follows the Moldau trail all the way to Melník with outstanding château and steep vineyards at the confluence of the Vltava (Moldau) and the Labe (Elbe) rivers. From Melnik route is parallel with the Elbe trail. You will pass Theresienstadt, a former Nazi concentration camp and Jewish ghetto. Past Žernoseky the route enters Porta Bohemica, a steep Elbe valley with vineyards. The route cuts through the Bohemian uplands, which is characterised by ancient volcanoes. With a short detour you can visit a cross border National park Bohemian-Saxonian Switzerland with magnificent rock formations and deep gorges at the Czech-German border.

The sunbathing cycle - EuroVelo 7, almost 437 km in the Czech Republic, copies either the Labská trail - in the section Hřensko - Mělník or the Vltava cycling route - in the section Mělník - Vyšší Brod. The first part of EuroVelo 7 from the border with Germany to Prague is designed for relaxing cyclists regardless of age or condition, the second part from Prague to Vyšší Brod and possibly up to Linz is destined mainly for sporty-minded cyclists. More than one week's reward will be rewarded by all who choose the rich cultural and natural monuments for the Sun Cycle Route as well as the wandering along the two largest Czech rivers of the Elbe and Vltava across the Ústecký, Středočeský and Jihočeský Regions.

The Danube Cycle Route is among the most beautiful cycling Routes in Europe. The Austrian section is about 380 kilometres in length, running between the city of Passau in Germany and the Slovakian capital, Bratislava.

The stretch runs almost entirely on dedicated bike paths right beside the scenic river. You can stop at Linz (European Capital of Culture in 2009), to discover modern art and architecture. The World Heritage listed Wachau valley with its castles, abbeys and vineyards is one of the most picturesque parts of the Danube Cycle Route.
Combine the cycle tour with a visit of one of the cultural sites such as Austria’s biggest Benedictine Abbey "Stift Melk" and the famous ruin in Dürnstein, where English king Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned. After a stroll through the historic town of Krems, continue the journey towards Vienna, Austria's enchanting capital full of cultural delights. From Vienna to the Slovak border you cross the Donau-Auen National Park. There are also great bike & boat cruise offers available, as well as the possibility to combine bike & train on many sections. You can be sure of excellent cycling conditions along the Danube Cycle Route. It was officially named a quality cycling route by ADFC, Germany’s most renowned cyclists’ organization. In the test, it received four of five possible stars.
