Backbone Mountain is the highest point in Maryland, with an elevation of 3,360 feet (1,024 meters) above sea level. It is located in the Appalachian Mountains in the western part of the state, near the West Virginia border in Garrett County.
Key Facts:
- Highest Natural Point in Maryland: The summit is known as Hoye Crest.
- Hiking Access: The easiest way to reach the peak is via a moderate 2.2-mile round-trip hike from the West Virginia side.
- State Line: The mountain itself extends into West Virginia, but Maryland’s highest point is on its ridge.
- Marker and Signage: At Hoye Crest, there is a sign and a register for visitors to log their names.
