[分享]:如何钓冲浪鲈鱼

CROSSNA fishermen:

Here’s a little more info on our recent salt water surfperch fishing venture at La Push, WA on the Olympic Coast - part of the fun during Crossna’s Dec 17 - 24/2022 Christmas trip!

These Redtail Surfperch [Amphistichus rhodoterus] are a lot of fun to catch, and tasty too! They live in the pounding surf of the exposed Pacific west coast from California to western Vancouver Island. Their habitat is the surf zone itself, where they feed on sand shrimp dislodged by the breaking waves. It’s an all-season fishery, with mid-winter being a particularly good time, a real treat! The “go-to” tackle for catching these funky little fish is pretty simple – I was using a 0.7 oz egg sinker as a terminal weight below two #1 snelled hooks, rigged with Berkley Gulp! 2 inch Sandworm Nereis Camo. Fairly light line (12 lb test) on an 8’6” medium action baitcasting rod. Waders & self- inflating PFD (belt type) get you out into water alternatively a few inches to waist deep, and keep you warm and safe!

Actually it’s amazing that these fish can see the presentation at all, in the froth, bubbles and turbidity… a small brown & green worm hopping over the brown sand, between the crashing waves, but they do (even in the low light of dusk!) and they hit quite hard, fighting about like a largemouth bass of the same size. They have a distinctive rapid frequency movement, with a lot of side-to-side travel.

A few thoughts, in no particular order:

•        Surfperch tend to be in schools. If you make, say, six casts with no luck, then move along shore 25m and try again. Stay on the sandy beach, avoid the pebble beach (no fish there). Cast over the breaking waves to the trough beyond, and keep the lure moving slowly along the bottom, with a slight twitching action. Its rare to lose one of these fish once hooked, they’re actively feeding.

•        A mid-range receding tide is the most productive. An incoming tide carries more weed in the waves, so you’re always removing it from your hooks & weight. A low tide has smaller surf, but I only got small fish then. A high tide can be a dangerous time to be wading… too wild, the breaking waves are huge, logs dislodge from the shore and move back & forth in the surf. You can imagine what would happen if you got on the seaward side of one of them!

•        Don’t stand still. Keep moving slowly, side stepping along the beach. The breaking waves tend undermine the sand you are standing on, liquefying it, so that you can find yourself suddenly standing on quicksand! Surprising, the first few times it happens - its easy to lose your balance and fall over.

•        Something to store the fish in (on your person) is handy, avoiding always walking back to the dry beach with each fish. String them to your belt or use a canvas creel. I picked up this one at Canadian Tire, it turned out to be perfect for the job:

Lulu & I have caught surfperch at First Beach, La Push, WA and at Long Beach, Tofino, BC. Please let the club know how you make out!

Best of the New Year !

Gordon G.
