20th Annual Becel Heart&Stroke Ride for Heart Raises $2.7 Million for The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario
TORONTO, June 3 /CNW/ - Today, on the 20th anniversary of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario's Becel Heart&Stroke Ride for Heart, more than 12,000 cyclists and in-line skaters raised $2.7 million. This outstanding show of support will help the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario continue to be one of Canada's largest funders of heart and stroke research: hundreds of hospital- and university-based research teams depend on the Foundation year after year. (The 2006 total raised was a record $2.1 million in Ontario and Alberta, with 12,000 cyclists and in-line skaters participating.)
The on-site spokespeople for the Becel Heart&Stroke Ride for Heart will be two survivor cyclists -54-year-old Candace Allman, who has survived a stroke, and 45-year-old Linda Lewis-Daly, who suffered a heart attack. The medical spokesperson for the Ride for Heart, Dr. Chi-Ming Chow, will also be available for interviews. Representing the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario will be CEO, Rocco Rossi; Elissa Freeman, Director of Public Relations and Public Affairs; and Sharon Edwards, Senior Associate Manager, Public Relations and Public Affairs.
This year, nine-year-old Amanda Belzowski has raised close to $21,000 with her lemonade stand, on-line through her website and from local businesses. She presented a super-size cheque to CEO Rocco Rossi. Encouraged by Donald Trump, young Amanda, has been thinking Big. She will continue to collect pledges beyond June 3, and is hoping to achieve the ambitious goal of $100,000 in the next three to five years. Amanda will be on-site with her family and will be available for interviews.
The Becel Heart&Stroke Ride for Heart is the country's most successful one-day charity cycling event in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario. The funds raised by the Ride for Heart support breakthrough medical advancements, social change and health education. The Heart and Stroke Foundation leads the way in protecting the health of the millions of Canadians who are at risk of developing some form of heart disease or stroke over their lifetime. |
