Have had many comfy nights in a cave. Weight for tent appears a bit off maybe? A single wall tent without a floor (BD megamid style or even a MSR hubba bubba with just the fly pitched is maybe 3 - 4 pounds top). Even a bombproof Bibler single wall is about 7 pounds - but admittedly bulky
2 hours sounds about right.
Snow caves are warmer and great for 2 nights or more trips. Tents are so light now Im not sure I'd use one unless i was in a seriously cold spot.
Don;t know how you dug the cave but this is what works:
1. Strip to base layer before digging.
2. have dry underwear - undershirt to change to after digging and change immediately.
3. One person digs first (call them the mole). The mole is smallest person. Best for the mole to have a small short shovel.
4. Other person excavates whatever the mole digs.
5. Dig into a deep bank of snow. Roofs must be thick.
6. Check wind direction before digging; entry/exit must be away from wind.
7. Try to get roof as round (concave if viewed from inside) as possible. Roof won't drip if concave.
8. Ideal temps for snowcaves are around minus 10 below. Minus 5 is ok. Anything higher and you have lots of condensation and you're almost always better off in a well-ventilated tent dug in well.
9. Take time to carve out a bit of a bench to put in stuff; stack gear etc. Finding lost gear in a snowcave is a pain.
10. Use a probe and punch a few holes in the roof of the cave
11. Bring your shovel into the cave.
12. Don't worry too much if the roof sags a bit - sagging a lot though is seriously not cool.
13. Get a candle lantern and light it in the cave. It can dry out the air a bit.
14. If its very wet in the cave you will get serious moisture. Everyone has their own system. I put down a trashbag on the sleeping area, then use a ridgerest and a small packable thermarest. pack goes on feet. down vest into stuffsack as pillow. Pee bottle close by. Haven't used it yet in a cave but i bought a MEC penguin overbag that's light and fairly waterproof - that may help for keeping the bag fairly dry.
15. Some people cook in the cave. I choose not to.
