INTRO and DESCRIPTION:
Come and join me for a fun and free navigation course at Jericho Beach this Saturday.
The course is an introduction to navigation and will cover the basics. It will be mostly theory
with different drills. You will have a good understanding of the concepts but you will need
set up your own practice.
Subjects include:
1) Maps:
- Types, scale, distance, elevation, direction
- Reading and visualizing topographic maps
- Navigation by map
2) Compass
- Bearings
- Navigation by compass
3) Map and Compass
- Declination
- Plotting a bearing
- Determining your position
- Identifying landscape features
- Staying found
Bring with you a compass, notebook, and pencil.
If you don't have a compass, you may borrow or buy one. The most popular brands are Silva, Suunto,
Nexus, and Brunton. The compass has to be a base plate which comes in different types: Minimal,
with mirror, with declination adjustment, and full featured. Minimal will do the work but if cost is not a factor,
I recommend that you buy the full featured. If you can afford more than the minimal, buy the one with
declination adjustment. There is a also possibility that you may decide to exchange the compass with the
another one after the course so buy one that you can return. If you have a question, let me know.
There is a chance of showers on Saturday, so be prepared. If you know a sheltered place nearby
Jericho Beach, please let me know.
