Info quoted from Bivouac:

Singing Pass Trail(14km)

Markings:
Orange Squares

General Route: Runs up the south side of Fitzsimmons Creek.

Destinations: A major access point to Garibaldi Park - Spearhead Traverse, Singing Pass, as well as the Whistler and Blackcomb ski lifts.

How to Follow: The trailhead is off Village Gate Road at the bus loop. The road up to the Singing Pass trailhead is now officially closed to vehicle traffic due to slope instability. Park in the skier day parking lots and follow the road heading south from the Whistler Transit Loop. Keep left a few hundred meters later to avoid going up Whistler Mountain. At 4km, the old parking lot is reached. A gentle trail climbs from here up to Singing Pass, 11.5km from the village. The trail is in excellent shape with easy crossing of Harmony, Flute and Oboe Creeks. It is suitable for mountain biking, but mountain biking is not permitted on the portion of the trail inside Garibaldi Park. (You can legally ride up to the park boundary). At Singing Pass, the trail splits. One branch climbs another 200m vertical up to Russet Lake and the Himmelsbach Hut. The other branch climbs over Oboe and Flute summits to the top of the Whistler Village Gondola. If you hike up here in the summer, the ride down is free.

In the winter, the trail is frequently used to return to the Village from a ski tour to Singing Pass. The steepness of the trail is perfect for gliding down, steep enough to maintain speed, but not requiring much braking. Negotiating the small canyon at Flute Creek can be difficult on skis, especially when snowcover is limited. The lower portions of the trail can also be very difficult (rocks and trees) when snow cover is thin. Although some people choose not to ascend the trail in winter, it is a viable route. Be aware that skiers will be coming down this route at speed. For those wishing to use lift access, a single ride backcountry ticket can be purchased from the lift company for about $27. BC Parks and the Resort Municipality of Whistler have decided not to maintain the old logging road.

Musical Bumps Trail(6km)

Markings: Portions within the Whistler Ski Area Winter Boundary are signed, but the path is obvious once snowfree. Some cairns in the alpine.

General Route: From Whistler Gondola to Little Whistler to Piccolo Summit to Flute Summit to Oboe Summit to Singing Pass. Or from bus loop near GLC head up the Singing Pass Trail to a signed cut-off at the pass then to Oboe, Flute, Piccolo, and the summit of Whistler.

Condition: Generally gentle slopes and entirely within the alpine. Can be confusing in fog.

Destinations:
From Whistler Mountain to the Eastern Fitzsimmons Range and Singing Pass.

How to Follow: A generally gentle and meandering trail that was jointly built through volunteer and park efforts, the Musical Bumps Trail provides a ramble through mostly alpine terrain with fine views of the mountains and glaciers of central Garibaldi Park. The trail travels through a variety of environments, from lush meadows to desolate rocky summits. If accessed via the Whistler Mountain lift system, the most commonly used portion of the trail initially crosses Harmony Ridge before crossing two flat summits in a row, starting with Flute Summit and then Oboe Summit. The trail meanders through alpine trundra for most of its length, before entering the lush meadows near Singing Pass. The Musical Bumps Trail is fast becoming the more common approach to the Himmelsbach Hut at Russett Lake, beneath Mount Fissile, regardless of season.

Russet Lake Hut (Himmelsbach Hut, Altitude:1880 m, sleeps: 12 people, fee:none)

The hut provides for sheltered cooking when storms are raging, but many visitors choose to spend the night outside. During the summer, the sheer volume of visitors may make staying in the hut a non-option. The spectacular beauty of the surrounding area, particularly the views of The Spearhead Range from the Himmelsbach Hut and Russet Lake and the nearby north face of Fissile, make this a popular area.

Run by the British Columbia Mountaineering Club and BC Provincial Parks, the hut sleeps six. Contrary to previous info, this hut does NOT contain a stove. However, it is quite warm and a welcome shelter on a winter's evening. No charge. Call 604-898-3678.
