很吸引的計劃, 但不知是否在自己的能力範圍之內 (steep scramble......)?!

Sweet. I was about to purchase an Ice Axe and Crampons. Would seriously consider joining this trip. Is it going to be a day trip or staying overnite somewhere in between?

Form the Mt. ST Helen web site:

The most important thing to carry with you is your good judgement, but all climbers should carry:

Climbing Helmet or Hard Hat - Protect your head in the event of volcanic ballistics or rock fall.

Dust Mask (N95 type) - Cover your mouth and nose in the event of ashfall or blowing dust. Dust Masks (N95 type) should be available from any large hardware store.

Goggles or Sunglasses with Side Shields, Sunscreen - The Sun reflecting off of snow and ash is intense. Avoid contact lenses, as blowing ash and dust can be a problem. And don't forget a hat.

Climbing Boots - Sturdy, comfortable hiking boots and gaiters to keep out snow and ash.

Map, Compass, Route Markers - Use them to know where you are and where you are going. Be sure to tell someone at home of your plans.

First Aid Kit - You may need to come to your own rescue, or help someone else. Be prepared!
Knife - Handy for all kinds of purposes, especially the type with extra tools.

Extra Food and Water - Bring at least two quarts of water per person. No water is available at Climbers Bivouac or on the climbing route. Carry plenty of food to snack on all day. Reduce packaging to eliminate trash.

Extra Clothing - A beautiful sunny morning can turn into a cold rainy afternoon. Plan ahead! Layered clothing including full rain gear, gloves and hat. Layering allows you to adjust your clothing to different exertion levels and weather.

Emergency signal device
Emergency Shelter - Yes, you planned to be out on one very long day. Be prepared just in case that longer day turns into something much longer.

Flashlight, extra batteries, and bulb - A necessity when the day is short and the trail is long.

:yipe:  :b.cool: Who can resist the temptation and lure of the big name, the living volcano.
I really want to do it
However, both physically and technically, I don't feel confident and competent.
:pa:
April is next month. Lulu, is there any chance we can practice to use the ice axe and crampon :qj:

Flex,
Here is the true data from the Mt. St Helens official website. The easiest route is: a nontechnical scramble, gaining 4,500 feet in 5 miles. Most climbers complete the round trip in 7 to 12 hours.

One of my officemates made it 2 yrs ago in 10 hrs. She does not think it is harder than Camp Muir. So u should be worry-free to go there. However, this one is a little twisted. LuLu wants to go there in Apr. Even by the end of Apr, the hike trail is still covered by snow/ice. And the route is NOT clearly marked with snow/ice. Late summer is the best time to go there and it needs early reservation for hiking. I do not think I would go with LuLu's and would like to host a hiking group for Aug. I am told Canadians will have Aug 4 as a long wknd.

LuLu,
It must be a fine day to view the cone of lava growing from the bottom of the volcano, It hardly has chance to do it in Apr, but mostly like in Aug. Will u change ur mind if we have an Aug hiking? We would like to recruit u in anyway we can, even bribery. Lao Wang will bring a Beijing Duck for u and I will bring the same stuff if u go in Aug.

LuLu,
Do u have a schedule for Apr? I will return SEA by Apr 8 and would go with u if the hiking is at the end of Apr. I need to excise a lot after 20 days in China, FB everyday, even starting from RMB100 breakfast. I have been Mt St Helens three times and always have a dream to be on the top of it.

LuLu,

1. U r right. Per this St Helens permission website, all spots are filled up for late July and early August. Apr is widely open for wild hikers.

2. U r wrong. Per Citywander, some experienced hikers with GPS lost when then came down last May with snow/ice covering the trails. Instead of a normal 10 hrs hiking, they took 20 hrs.

3. The no-snow/ice hiking takes 10 hrs. Under this circumstance, u might drive back Vancouver after dayhiking on Sun. It means the whole trip could be done in two-day. Otherwise, it would be a three-day trip.

4. My suggestion is to compensate the schedule of Apr and Aug, but the July 13. (I will be in biz trip again in June)

Action: we need to make reservation now if we do want to go in summer. Pls let me know we should deposit $22.

I haven't found out the driving distance from Van to St. Helen, but I guess it will take about at least 6 hrs.  So we need 3 days for this trip.  I can't join in Apr as I haven't booked any vacation.  Moreover, I may have relatives visting in Aug...too bad.

In if good weather.

Queried different people for climbing St. Helen on April. What I got is dependent on the weather (The journey will change to be miserable in bad condition). I will keep posting what I get.

Interested.  Will confirm later when a definite date is set and with good weather.
In if good weather.
Definitely, I like to go under good weather, at least not under rainy days.

This might be a good idea: no reservation until we have some good weather forecast for coming wknd, could be up to 10 to 12 days ahead of the wknd. June and 1st half of July are still widely open for reservation.

Driving: Seven yrs ago, I did once to drive 7 hrs after 12 hrs hiking Yosemite. It should be 6 hrs between LA and Yosemite. But it took me 7 hrs due to my exhausted body. It is possible to drive back Vancouver at the same night. However, all of u r welcome to stay at my place after hiking.
